چکیده

This paper presents an approach to model-based controller development for Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI). The control strategy for HCCI is based on a physical two state discrete time model of the process. As the trapped exhaust is pivotal in setting up the cyclic coupling, its temperature and the amount of oxygen present in it are selected as the states of the system. The model is linearized about an operating point in order to generate simple linear controllers. The states of the model, however, are not directly measurable. Hence an observer is used to generate estimates of the states, which are then used by a controller to track a desired system trajectory. Results from simulation show that the system can be controlled with some error about an operating point. Experimental results demonstrate comparable tracking, along with a reduction in the cycle-to-cycle variability of HCCI.

Online Adaptive Residual Mass Estimation in a Multicylinder Recompression Hcci Engine

This work presents two advances to the estimation of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) dynamics. Combustion phasing prediction in control-oriented models has been achieved by modeling the in-cylinder temperature and composition dynamics, which are dictated by the large mass of residuals trapped between cycles. As such, an accurate prediction of the residual gas fraction as a functi...

Studying the Effect of Reformer Gas and Exhaust Gas Recirculation on Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engine Operation

Combustion in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine is controlled auto ignition of well-mixed fuel, air and residual gas. Since onset of HCCI combustion depends on the auto ignition of fuel/air mixture, there is no direct control on the start of combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable rather easily especially at lower and higher engine load. Charge strati...

Modeling The Stable Operating Envelope For Partially Stable Combustion Engines Using Class Imbalance Learning

Advanced combustion technologies such as homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines have a narrow stable operating region defined by complex control strategies such as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable valve timing among others. For such systems, it is important to identify the operating envelope or the boundary of stable operation for diagnostics and control purposes. Ob...
